9. Destructive: Skull Only

Opening motion with jaw joint out-of-place, no muscles.

  Purposes

Depicts a jaw joint that is not in centric relation when the bite comes to full contact.

To show that we've learned to bite here out of habit - when we're awake this is the safest place to bite because the teeth meet with the least amount of interference.

  Presenting

State this acquired bite is very common and has usually been that way since growth and development of the jaw ceases or since the bite was altered during orthodontics or full mouth reconstruction.

Point out that the condyle is not fully lined up in centric relation (the highest position of the joint in the socket) - the condyles are not seated in a stable position.

Open and close the jaw and show how the jaw moves and rotates, and how the position of the teeth control the joint position.

Tell the clients that they bite here because it is the safest position as everything fits evenly with the teeth hitting simultaneously.

"One of the best tutorials I've seen for explaining occlusal disease to patients. The reasons for occlusal therapy are explained with excellent animations and anatomic accuracy."
