17. Molar Contact: Incorrect

Back teeth not coming together correctly (2D cross section, meeting on the slopes).

  Purposes

Depicts a reason for tooth looseness, wear and receding gums or the lower jaw shifting to accommodate the fit of the teeth.

Show effect of molars not hitting at cusps

  Presenting

Begin by orientating the client as to what they see. Show how this is a molar view on the subject's right side. Give them the landmarks of tongue and cheek.

Show how the teeth don't strike on the high and low points (cusp tips and fossas) but rather they strike on the inclines.

Point out how the direction of force is not vertical and has a sideways component.

As the teeth contact point out how the upper tooth moves. Explain how this can cause wear and how the bone on the cheek side is thinning.

"One of the best tutorials I've seen for explaining occlusal disease to patients. The reasons for occlusal therapy are explained with excellent animations and anatomic accuracy."
